3 tips for sightseeing in Rome

5th January 2020 by emily

We were lucky enough to honeymoon in Italy and as you can imagine, Rome in particular didn’t disappoint. Delicious food, ancient culture, great wine and a bustling city. I’ll resist rattling off everything that we loved. Instead, here are three of the highlights.

Unwind with a spa experience

Dinner at QC Terma Rome

If you’re looking for a total chill out, look no further than QC Terme Wellness Hotel Fiumicino. Less than a 10 minute taxi journey from the airport, this is the spa experience you’ve been waiting for. Nestled in Trajan’s natural park, the hotel has a tranquil atmosphere, beautiful relaxation areas and architecture.

We didn’t wait long to put on our robes and explore the heated pools, saunas and vast gardens. It was gorgeous to sit outside and see the areas lit up as dusk fell. We followed this with a beautiful meal outside on the terrace of the hotel restaurant. We left so refreshed the next morning and ready for the next part of our trip.

Do a walking tour of the Colosseum

Guided walking tour of the Colosseum

What a staggering place to visit. Seeing Iain walk through a shaded tunnel into the blistering sun and the inner part of the auditorium will stay with me forever. I couldn’t recommend a walking tour enough. Our guide imparted so much knowledge is such a short space of time and kept the tour moving at a great pace.

Some interesting facts I didn’t know. Gladiators were paid well during Roman times and it was not in their owners interests for them to die in a battle. They often only fought two or three times in a whole year.

The Forum is also part of tour and one of my favourite views was looking down on the awesome crumbling ruins. The scale and wealth of Rome during this period is almost unimaginable but our guide brought this to life.

Get lost in Trastevere

Busker playing to crowds in Trastevere

We fell in love with this area. From drinking €2 Peroni outside in a busy square, to eating pizza and watching a busker stop about 200 people in their tracks – this area pulls you in. It isn’t trying to be anything other than itself. That’s one of the things that I loved most about Rome. It has such beauty, culture and history and embraces modernity with nothing to prove.

Believe me. There are so many other  things to list but part of the magic of the city is finding your own special corners and making your own unforgettable memories.
