I love nothing more than a morning spent at a food market. One of the best things about living in London is the sheer range of choice on offer. Fresh produce, knowledgeable traders and great atmosphere – what more could you want from the start to any weekend?
Brockley Market isn’t as well known as Borough or Broadway Markets, but it’s a real gem and it’s no surprise that it was a Time Out winner for 100 Best Cheap Eats.
Tummy rumbling?
We opted for delicious food from Sub Cult who are serious when it comes to humble sandwich. They pride themselves on soft American deli-style sub rolls that are baked to a secret bagel-brioche dough recipe. My sub came with with succulent bacon, chipolatas and truffle mayo. It was as good as it sounds! Iain went for calamari, pork shoulder, crackling and parsley and lemon sauce. Massive thumbs up from both of us.
Rise and shine
Make sure you get there early as it’s only open 10am-2pm on Saturday. It also says cash only on the website but every stall I went to had card machines. If you need a caffeine hit, the coffee from Browns of Brockey is not to be missed.
How to get there: We took the overground to New Cross Gate and it was about a 15 minute walk to the carpark where the market is held.
Address: Lewisham College Carpark, Lewisham Way, London SE4 1UT
Time for more exploring?
What was a great surprise is how close it is to Greenwich. We were able to walk to Greenwich Market to continue on our quest for curiosities and more food of course. We got a ferry back to Embankment and used our contactless cards, again so handy. To sum it it, one of the best days I’ve had out wandering London boroughs in a long time!
