Keeping active in Zurich

24th April 2020 by emily

One of the things about lock-down is that it’s making us take things slower and fresh air and exercise have become so important to put structure on our days.

A new routine

My family and friends in Dublin are living with a restriction at the moment where you can’t go further than 2km from your house which is really tough. They’re all doing brilliantly and coping so well. They’re getting creative and trying alternate routes, mixing it up with cycles and some have started running challenges like Couch to 5K.

Feel the burn

Exercise has always helped my well-being and since I was a child I’ve loved it. I had a lot of energy when I was little so one of my first memories is trying gymnastics with my sister and terrifying my Mom when she came to a training session. I was scaling a really high rope without fear! Needless to say, I didn’t stay long in the classes! Running and camogie followed and there’s no doubt that sport gives a great rush of feel good endorphins. There’s no better feeling that doing something you thought you couldn’t.

Something new

My latest fitness challenge with Iain is trying out Zurich’s Publibikes. I felt quite nervous on my first ride but now I’m really enjoying it. It’s allowing us to explore a bit further along the lake which is really exciting. Iain is a great teacher and has endless patience for my slow and steady approach! The cycle lanes in the city are really safe and well signposted so I’m feeling more confident with every cycle.

A place of beauty

We feel so lucky to be in Zurich at the moment. There’s so much to take in here that’s truly beautiful – flowers, architecture, animals, vineyards, the lake and so much more. Here are a few photos from recent runs, walks and cycles and the things that are making me feel thankful every day.
