Creating a capsule wardrobe

4th February 2018 by emily

Owning a 37 piece, carefully curated wardrobe is the dream right? The reality is a little further from the truth for most of us. That’s why it was so refreshing to listen to Lauren Jobling, founder of Wardrobe Doctor remind us that less is more when it comes to our wardrobe. I’ll try and remember that the next time I’m compulsively drawn (as I always am), to dark floral-printed blouses.

Clean up your closet

It was a lesson in going back to basics and streamlining what you own. Lauren stressed the importance of dressing for your body shape and wearing clothes that make you feel good. If you have pieces that bring out negative thoughts, get rid of them. Embrace quality over quantity and invest in timeless additions that will take you from work to dinner or, impromptu drinks. A great-fitting pair of jeans, a classic white shirt, a star vintage find, buy pieces that will carry you through seasons.

Buy less, wear more

It’s true that a tidy, organised space means a clearer mind and another plus of a smaller wardrobe is that it can save you time. Gone are mornings spent riffling through stuffed rails of clothes you’re not event sure you like all that much. A bit of advice from Lauren that has stayed with me is that if you haven’t worn an item of clothing in a year, you won’t wear it. I’ve had a little word with myself about some of the summer clothes that lurk in the depths of my wardrobe that are past their best. Maybe it’s the Irish mentality that as we only get a few sunny weeks a year so we tend to stockpile our lighter layers just in case the clouds part at short notice!

Something to sell?

Another tip that I picked up was to look at re-selling sites for pieces that you know will go to good use and might even make you a bit of money. Check out Rebelle or Vestiaire Collective and as Lauren said during her talk, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. Go on, take a look into that Narnia-style wardrobe, I bet there’s a few gems lurking, either to be re-discovered or passed on.
