One of my favourite things about living in London is Sunday afternoon wanderings. When the sun shines, it’s even better and that’s exactly what happened today!
Finsbury Park, Highbury and Green Lanes have so many hidden gems when it comes to coffee shops, restaurants and antiques and homewares stores. You’re literally spoilt for choice.
The Blighty Coffee on Blackstock Road in Finsbury Park is such a find. With it’s World War 2 theme, you can sip your coffee in a make shift air raid bunker or attend life drawing classes for just £2.50 per session. I had a really tasty Oranchino with a delicious punch of orange zest taste. It was like a Terry’s Chocolate orange in a cup, yum yum. The staff were lovely too, I’ll definitely be back.
We took our stroll after this towards Highbury and stumbled across Gathering Moss – a shop filled with gorgeous designs and hand-craft contemporary and rustic furniture. My favourite pieces were a Thai carved head and vintage jewellery stand. It’s full of inspiration and upcycling ideas.
On the foodie front, we finally made it to Gökyüzü , Turkish restaurant in Green Lanes yesterday. Friends had raved about it and I’ve been trying to get to it for weeks. We ended up eating early at around 5:30pm and it meant that we got a table straight away. My top tip, go hungry! Wow are the portions generous! We enjoyed delicious Tzatziki and warm breads followed by a tasty green salad all complimentary.
We followed it up by the sharing platter for two, which was overflowing with mixed lamb and chicken shish, doner and rice and bulger . I actually think that it could have fed four people and what a good complaint to say that we had too much food. The thing that I liked most about this restaurant was the bustling atmosphere and the quality of the meat was top-notch. We made sure to try the Turkish beer Efes too and I can see why it has received such fantastic reviews from Time Out and TripAdvisor.
Happy exploring!
