I love nothing more than a bit of culture-vulturing and it must run in the family because even before my Mom and Dad arrive for a visit to London, we have about 10 things on our hit-list! They visited in late January and we spent a fantastic afternoon exploring.
The glimpse of Hampton Court Palace as you walk across the river is stunning and we couldn’t wait to get inside and look around. The Great Hall oozes with history and as you walk around you can just imagine the banquets, music, fun or serious meetings that have taken place here over the years. It is England’s last and greatest medieval hall and also one of Britain’s oldest theatres. Just think, William Shakespeare’s company called the ‘King’s Men’ performed for King James I in 1603-4. Henry VIII’s huge tapestries hang on the walls, while light shines through the stained glass windows above and it gives a glimpse into the scale and wealth of this time.
We used the audio guide and it gave a great overview of the history of the palace and it’s a good idea if you are tight for time. The infamous Henry VIII and his many wives and his family history is covered, along with options to visit his private apartments, kitchens and private chapel. The real surprise was the stunning collection of art and the chance to see a Caravaggio for example in such a historic place.
Another thing that I found really interesting was the fashion of the time. The mannequins gave a great insight into how petite people were how much status and attention was devoted to dressing.
The gardens at Hampton Court are beautiful and wind along the river Thames. We got very lucky with a clear day of winter sunshine and saw ducks running across the ice covered fountains and river.
If you are looking for a fun place to visit, this should definitely make your list. I gained entry for free due to my work but tickets can be bought online on the official website. Entry for an adult is £18.50.
