Max’s Sandwich Shop on Stroud Green in Finsbury Park is spot on the money – mouthwatering sambos, booze, great coffee and an even better atmosphere.
We stopped by for a Saturday brunch and wow, am I glad we did. One of the best things about Max’s, is Max Halley himself. He bounds around his café with buzzy energy and hearty greetings as people enter. Within seconds, you feel right at home and you know this man means business when it comes to good quality fare.
We ordered the brilliantly named ‘What’s your beef all about?’ with slutty gravy, while a friend tucked into ‘Ham, Egg ‘n’ Chips’. Max brought out our sandwiches wrapped-up in paper with an elastic band – no cutlery or plates in sight. So how do I rate my sandwich? In one word – wow! The braised short ribs were unbelievably tender, nestled in between salty thick bread, while the cassava crisps added a satisfying crunch. The gravy was rich and mixed with sauerkraut, just tied the explosion of tastiness together.
Little touches ticked the boxes – a handwritten, well crafted menu, a good range of booze for those who are fond of a tipple and a brilliant soundtrack makes it a place to wile away the hours or bring a big group of friends for a feast. Max’s isn’t your tablecloth and fancy silverware kind of place and I love that. It has exposed wood and carefully placed hand-crafted lampshades (designed by owner Max’s girlfriend). No frills is not to say shabby or downbeat, this place just doesn’t seem to give a monkeys about the silly gimmicky extras – the main event is the food!
There are only three sambos gracing the menu, along with a daily special and at £7 they’re a real bargain. If you’re still hungry, you can tuck into pudding for £5. So will the offering be be changing anytime soon? Max gave hints of some future inclusions to try but don’t worry – the ‘Ham, Egg ‘n’ Chips’ is firm fixture on the menu! ” That isn’t going anywhere, it’s here to stay”, says Max. Stop by and you’ll be sure to leave a very happy and full camper. I can’t wait to go back again soon.
