I love when I’m sitting opposite someone on the tube or the bus and they have that really funny expression of not wanting to burst out laughing so instead do inner battle with pursed smiles, crinkly eyes and quick page turns. This can only mean only one thing – they’re experiencing a cracker of a read.
Well folks, that’s been me the last few days with a copy of Not That Kind Of Girl by Lena Dunham. My work bud Hazel lent it to me and I’m so glad that she had spree on Amazon recently because I most definitely profited! The thing that I must stress is that this book is more than a just a comedy. Lena Dunham has that rare writer’s gift to have you laughing one minute and then shocked or saddened as you reach the end of a page.
I’m not going to give away too much about the happenings of the book as that will ruin some of the surprises but what I will say is that as a late twenty something year-old myself, dealing with the many things that life throws at you, Dunham’s brutal humour and emotional voice is right on the money. She’s a truly gifted writer and I love her humour and the things that she is willing to reveal to us about her life and past that reveal the jigsaw of who she has become today.
Happy page turning!
