We are lucky enough to live a short walk away from the Kolly Gallery in Seefeld. It’s almost impossible to pass it without your eyes being drawn to the amazing art and exhibitions that take place inside. The most recent one to stop us in our tracks was Street Clash, a homage to the highs of the 1990s with works from David Bruce, Juan Miguel Quiñones, Gris1, Speedy Graphito and a sneaker exhibition from Swiss Collections. It’s such a trip in nostalgia for all the things I loved when I was growing up.
A hard stone master
Juan Miguel Quiñones is self-taught Spanish sculptor and his exact replica of everyday items is so creative and fun. This Game Boy is the perfect example of making an artwork in the Renaissance technique where semiprecious stones are inlaid in marble. Check out more of his work here.
Gris1: A pioneer of French Street Art
This French artist is a member of the art collective and graffiti crew, Da Mental Vaporz (DMV) and I love his art and how he mixes styles and layers his works. It’s also amazing to see different styles like Pop Art and gaming in one piece. Every time you look you see something different.
A trip down memory lane
Glimpsing Pac-Man, Super Mario and Tetris in these works by French Painter Speedy Graphito, bring back such happy memories of childhood. It’s only when faced with these video game motifs that you realise how familiar and comforting they are. My best friend had a Sega Mega Drive and I will never forget the music from the Marble Zone in Sonic or being chased by the ever scary Dr. Robotnic! A true pioneer of the French Street Art movement and a pleasure to see his work up close.
He shoots, he scores
It feels like basketball and celebrating the amazing contribution of Michael Jordon to both sports and popular culture is around every turn at the moment. And I’m so happy to see this! From the incredibly popular The Last Dance on Netflix to the recently released Air movie, which charts the rise of Nike thanks to its launch of the Air Jordan franchise, this is Jordan’s time to shine bright again. And there is no doubt that basketball is on the mind of artist David Bruce when we see the sport’s motifs in his artworks. Smiley faces, bananas and basketballs. The signature of this original graffiti artist!
