I went to my first ever cricket match on Sunday and what a day it was. I had no idea what to expect but from the second we stepped out of the tube at Oval station, I knew it was going to be pretty special. The supporters from Bangladesh were literally jumping with excitement on the walk to the ground, with many dressed up as tigers and draped in their country’s flags. The South African contingent were equally vocal and full of cheer for the match ahead.
A total amateur, even when it comes to spectating, what I enjoyed most was the focus and interest from the crowd over so many hours. It’s a long day but both teams put in so much and the crowd responded with such joy and enthusiasm with every score. I can now proudly say that I understand the run rate, the importance of it not raining for the flow of the game and the difference between spin and fast bowling!
Seeing a World Cup game in this stadium was a real privilege and another thing ticked off the bucket list after almost 8 years in London. A great day all round!
