Brunch has to be one of life’s simple pleasures. Combine this with exploring a new city and I’m in my happy place. We got a few great food tips when we were in Birmingham recently and didn’t miss the opportunity to visit Medicine on New Street. I love the feel of spaces with history and this 2,200 sq ft space on the first floor of a Victorian building is both airy and full of atmosphere.
A versatile space
Previously home to the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, this space is now a mixture of dining and also an event and exhibition area. When we visited, a brilliant photographic display Portraits of Black Britain by Herbert Walters adorned the walls.
The menu is extensive and we opted for delicious Avocado Tartine with buttered sourdough, smashed avocado, semi dried tomatoes, radish ceviche, pomegranate, dukkah and a poached egg. I can never resist a side, so we added a hash brown with Romesco. It was as yummy as it looks. The coffee was strong and great quality – just the kick we needed for more sightseeing.
Something sweet
We were on a fast turnaround so didn’t have time to have one of the mouthwatering cakes but I would definitely go back to get a loaf of fresh bread or a cinnamon swirl. You can see there’s quite a selection to choose from!
Medicine New Street is open 8:30am – 5pm, Monday – Sunday
