Coronavirus has become a word that we now say more than any other since my last post. This virus, once contained within China has spread to become a global pandemic and it has changed all of our lives with it. It’s on the tip of our tongue as we speak with family, friends and work colleagues. We worry for our parents, grandparents and all who we love most in the world. It’s an invisible threat without a definite timeline.
The new restrictions in every country mean that we have to live differently. The things we took for granted are now so precious. Travel, seeing friends and family whenever we wanted. Celebrating birthdays, weddings and the many personal milestones we hold so dearly. Families can’t see each other for a host of health reasons and regular routines are now disrupted. What we do know for sure is that this period of social distancing and time in isolation is the only thing that will slow down the spread of this virus. The heartbreaking videos from Italy and Spain show how important it is that our hospitals come under as little additional pressure as possible.
What this time has brought home to everyone is the power of human connection. Technology has become a lifeline. Apps like Houseparty or a simple FaceTime call are exactly what we need to keep that human connection alive. The things that make us human have come to the fore – resilience, humour and friendship. We see it in WhatsApp groups sharing ideas on how to keep busy and manage time at home, neighours singing on balconies to keep spirits up and people sharing their skills online free of charge to help and educate. This is the reason that I’ve added this picture of two swans with necks bowed so close to create a heart. This sums up this time for me. A sense of togetherness. Even if it’s not physical. And for many it’s not right now.
What helps is that just as you’re thinking of others – your friends and family are thinking of you too and sending you love as we get to grips with our new routines.
Sending love, health and safety to all. xxx
