One of my favourite things about Zurich is that you only have to walk a couple of minutes before coming across a beautiful water fountain. There are over 1,200 dotted across the city filled with the highest-quality mountain spring water.
Hydration on the move
It has become a routine of mine to go for a run and then stop near the house for a mouthful of cold, refreshing water. How amazing to have this free resource and it’s also so nice to see birds, cats and animals using the fountains too. What a luxury when you think of parts of the world where water is so scarce. It’s one of the most precious commodities and it flows so freely here.
Design meets function
Each fountain is different and I love how they don’t just work as water fountains but as stunning works of public art. Some foundations even date back to the Middle Ages. If you’re interested to find out more about the history of Zurich, water and its fountains, you can take a walking tour. They also cover the much-loved swimming areas by the lake called Badis. I haven’t done this tour yet due to Covid-19 restrictions but when things settle down I’d love to take it.
Happy wandering
A daily walk is really important for everyone at the moment and I wish everyone a nice explore! I’m sure you’ll notice something interesting out and about and it will bring you a moment of happiness.
I have such great memories of a Cool Hunting course I took at University of Arts London in 2014. Carol Morgan led the course and she’s a fascinating Trend-forecaster. She covered art, design, fashion and how these things influence society and attitudes. She taught us to watch, challenge and question whatever we saw. What’s the message in the graffiti or street art? What types of food are on sale at this market? What are the buildings like? What are people wearing? This is how you spot trends or begin to understand a place and its people. Zurich’s fountains are another example of staying curious, alert and always wanting to find out more. I’m looking forward to whatever catches my attention next!
