What can you get for 5 francs in Zurich? A coffee, a tram fare or a quick sandwich on-the-go? Well, I have a better idea of how to spend your well-earned money – visit the stunning stained-glass windows by Belarusian artist, Marc Chagall in Fraumümster.
A lifetime of creativity
Chagall is one of my favourite artists for his distinctive colour palette, visual storytelling and figures. Even if you don’t see a work signed by him, you can be sure instantly of his aesthetic stamp. I think it’s so inspiring that Chagall only discovered stain-glass painting aged 70 and he was 83 when the windows were inaugurated in 1970. It is thanks to an elderly couple, Lou and Heinrich Hatt-Bucher that the works and Chagall’s fee was paid. As a result of this donation, millions of visitors enjoy these stunning works.
Priceless memories
One thing my Mom has passed on to me is her deep love and interest in art and it was so special to visit the windows with her. It was a warm day in the city so escaping into the vast church and to soak up the cool air and art was just what we needed. I will always remember this afternoon!
