Park and Villa Patumbah

9th April 2020 by emily

If you like architecture, get Zurich on your list of cities to visit. There are stunning gems around most corners but Park & Villa Patumbah really stands out from the crowd.

Who owns this stunning villa?

The owner of the villa was Carl Fürchtegott Grob-Zundel, a Zurich merchant who made his fortune running a tobacco plantation in Sumatra. He commissioned Swiss architects Alfred Chiodera and Theophil Tschudi to design in 1835. With extraordinary wealth, there were no limits on the style and opulence of the villa.

Stand back and you’ll admire elements of Italian Renaissance, Rococo, Swiss Chalet Style, and Southeast Asian folk art. Then add a delicate English-style garden and you’re surrounded by simply outstanding beauty.

A global influence

Taking inspiration from Indonesia in its name, Patumbah translates as, “A place you like to be.” I think this is absolutely true and it has a quiet elegance. You can also visit the Swiss Heritage Centre in the villa and an Asian temple on the second floor under a striking glass dome.

Tram stop: Fröhlichstrasse

Opening hours: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 2.00pm – 5.00pm
Thursday and Sunday 12.00pm – 5.00pm

Price: park entry free. Admission to villa – 10 CHF
